Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to make an application?

The beds of Taupo waters are vested in the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board, which holds the estate on behalf of the Ngati Tuwharetoa iwi.

As with any estate, even those properties with reserve status, it is important to have the permission of the owner before undertaking activities that impact on that property.

If any proposed activity or development impacts directly in any way on the bed of Taupo waters, then an application will need to be made to the Board before any activity or work commences.

When was the Board established and why?

Provision for the Taupo-nui-a-Tia Management Board was made in the 1992 Deed of Agreement between the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board and the Crown which resulted in the ownership of the beds of Taupo waters being revested in Ngati Tuwharetoa, acknowledging its tribal mana and rangatiratanga.

The Board was established in 1996 to manage and administer the beds of Taupo waters, in a partnership between Ngati Tuwharetoa and the Crown. These two partners each appoint half of the eight-member Board.
